Whether you're already in China or still planning the trip, one rule outlasts every guidebook: you need Taobao. In a country where online shopping is woven into daily life, this "everything store" has grown far beyond e-commerce, from clothes and electronics to cat food and furniture, it's the quiet backbone of how China shops.

on my second month in China, i needed a phone stand by the next morning, typed "手机支架" from a translator, and had it in my hands for ¥9 the day after, that speed is exactly why i tell every visitor to set up Taobao before the flight lands.
The Taobao app is only in Chinese, but buying things is pretty easy once you know the key buttons. You'll need Alipay (with a bound card) to pay, and a Chinese shipping address, have both ready before you start.
Taobao
Taobao is one of China's leading online shopping platforms, operated by Alibaba. Although the app is only in Chinese, the interface is intuitive, and with a few translation tricks, you can buy almost anything without reading a single character.
1. Set up Taobao
Your first task is installing the app, setting your shipping address, and linking a payment method.
- Download, Search "Taobao" (淘宝) in the App Store or Google Play and install the app.
- Set your shipping address, Go to "Settings" (设置) → "My shipping address" (我的收货地址). Tap "Add a New Shipping Address" and type in your recipient name, phone number, and delivery address in China. Tap "Save" at the bottom.
- Link Alipay, Taobao checkout runs on Alipay. Make sure you have Alipay installed and a card bound. See our notes on binding a card in Alipay if you haven't done that yet.
2. Search for products
Taobao gives you three ways to find what you want, even without reading Chinese:
Search by image. Tap the camera icon in the search bar, snap a photo of any item, and Taobao's AI finds similar products instantly. You can also upload a photo from your phone's album, perfect when you don't know the name of what you're looking for.
Search with Chinese keywords. Open a translation app (Baidu Translate or Google Translate), type your item in English, copy the Chinese translation, and paste it into Taobao's search bar. For example, "cat food" becomes "猫粮". If you're searching for an international brand, combine English and Chinese, "Royal Canin 猫粮" works perfectly.
Sort and filter. On the results page, sort by "Sales" (销量) for popular items, "Price" (价格) for budget options, or "Credit" (信用) for the most trusted sellers. "Overall ranking" is the default mixed sort.
it is not always as clean as the screenshots. the top few results are often paid ads (marked 广告), so sort by "Sales" (销量) to see what real buyers actually chose. my first order arrived a shade smaller than the photos, i tapped "Return or refund" (退货退款), and the money was back in Alipay within three days, no arguing needed.
3. Place an order
Once you've found your product, here's how to buy it:
- View product details, Tap a product to see full descriptions, reviews, and photos. Take a screenshot and run it through a translation app if you need to read the specs.
- Choose variations, Select your preferred color, size, or model (if applicable), then tap "Add to cart" (加入购物车) or "Buy now" (立即购买).
- Review your cart, Tap the shopping cart icon in the upper right corner. Select the items you want and confirm your shipping address.
- Checkout, Tap the checkout button at the bottom. Choose your payment method, Alipay (with a bound card) or a credit/debit card directly.
- Track your parcel, When the seller ships your order, you'll get a notification. Open the order details to view the tracking code and delivery status. Then just wait for your parcel to arrive!
beyond the basics, a few things make Taobao feel local. "Double 11" (双11) in November knocks 30 to 50 percent off across the site, most sellers throw in free "freight insurance" (运费险) so returns cost nothing, and livestream shopping (直播) sells everything from crab to couture. a t-shirt runs ¥20 to ¥60, a phone case about ¥10 to ¥25, and a small appliance often under ¥100, shipping is usually ¥5 to ¥12 or free above a threshold.

Do I need to read Chinese to use Taobao?
No. The image search and translation app combo lets you shop without reading a single character. Learn to recognize a few key buttons (cart, checkout, purchase) and you're set.
How do I search on Taobao without reading Chinese?
Two ways. Tap the camera icon in the search bar and snap a photo of what you want, Taobao finds similar items instantly. Or type the item in English in a translation app, copy the Chinese, and paste it into the search bar, "cat food" becomes "猫粮". Can I pay on Taobao with a foreign credit card?
